Want Things To Do In New York? Here’s 4 Unique Brooklyn Adventures

When people think of New York they usually think of the major tourist sites which abound on Manhattan Island or  out into New York harbour. It is usually an exit off the plane, into a taxi or onto the Airtrain to a hotel in Manhattan some zip around sightseeing and back to the airport.

If this is how you have planned your holiday for things to do in New York  then you could be missing out on some really amazing and unique activities.

You just have to venture off Manhattan Island and across the Brooklyn bridge to uncover some hidden treasures like:

The Brooklyn Bridge itself – the best way to appreciate it is to walk across – you won’t be disappointed and it only takes about a 30 minutes easy stroll!

Take a Slice Of Brooklyn Pizza tour – discover all the pizza delights from trendy Brooklyn Heights to the iconic Coney Island (you can still ride the Cyclone roller coaster during the summer months) and everywhere in between.Thin pizza or thick pizza, granita and gelato can all be found and tasted along the way and you may even enjoy a game of bocce at the indoor bocce court.

Check out cosmopolitan Atlantic Avenue. Here you will find a mixture of middle Eastern spice stores right next door to fabulous Vietnamese restaurants intermingled with upmarket bars and lounges.

The Brooklyn Museum has the 2nd largest art collection in the USA and has a huge amount of their exhibits out on display. If you are lucky and happen to be in Brooklyn on the first Saturday of the month the museum throws open the doors for lots of fun and partying.

  1. Jerri Says:

You are absolutely right about people not going to Brooklyn when the visit New York, they want to see the Statue of Liberty and the famous shopping spots down town and Brooklyn Bridge but they don’t cross over because Brooklyn has always been given a bad rap of being high crime and vigilante territory. After watching the Pizza tours though I think I will have to take the adventure.

  2. Walter Says:

I’ve actually been close enough to New York that I could see the back of the Statue of Liberty, we were in a semi picking up a load in Jersey City just across the harbor. It was really more fascinating then I thought it would be and I would like to go back just to get a better look at her. I do love Pizza though so I would definitely have to try the tour.

  3. William Says:

The Brooklyn Bridge looks so much longer than just a 20 min. walk. Now that I know that I will have to make the trek and see what is on the other side. When you get over there is that where the van for the pizza tour is or do you have to get a cab or something? Is the bridge mainly set up for tourist’s? I have never been to New York City but I have been close.

  4. Cristin Says:

I watched the video on the pizza tours in Brooklyn and I have to admit it really looks like a fun time. He has a great since of humor and makes the whole thing educational and entertaining, he keeps you laughing so it is impossible to not have fun. Thank you for this information it will make my trip to new York a lot more pleasurable.

  5. Anne Says:

The Brooklyn bridge is definitely easy walking and there is a nice wide and safe walkway for pedestrians.

  6. Yasmine27 Says:

This is an awesome place when you really want to have great adventure! Eating pizza while walking at the Brooklyn bridge? ‘love it!

  7. Jennifer Says:

I loved the video. It was very entertaining and I loved both the arial views of the city as well as the sound track. I was born in Jamaica Hospital in Queens and I have many relatives who reside throughout the five boroughs. I have not been back to New York since I visited it back in 1986. I work as a freelance photographer and one of the things that attracts me to New York is the landscape which makes for a backdrop with lots of unique character.

  8. Pearl Says:

I suppose I have become a fan of your travel blogs because I have been anticipating this article about New York, which you mentioned in one of your other articles about another country. And I must say, it was worth the wait. I really enjoyed the video and all the information you provide about “the city. It’s no wonder a hit cable TV series and two motion pictures feature New York as a key character.

  9. Janice Says:

I have been to New York once and it was during the mid 80′s when the Graffiti craze was at its height and subway cars were still being tagged by graffiti writers. And as a person who appreciates art (including graffiti), one of the unsung aspects of the surrounding boroughs outside of Manhattan, is the wall art that you see on the side of buildings and some store fronts. It usually has a message that is interesting to decipher.

  10. Natalie Says:

This was very interesting. You gave us a lot of ideas for things to do in New York, I have always just wanted to see the Statue of Liberty but now there is the World Trade Center memorial and all kind of things I am interested in seeing. Thank you for the information I thought you did a great job and an excellent job putting it together.

  11. Mary Says:

I have to admit I have never even entertained the idea of going to Brooklyn when I visit New York. I want to see the Brooklyn Bridge, but you are right I never thought about crossing it. Now that I have seen you video on the pizza tours I think I will have to do that, I love Pizza and it looks like he shows you a lot of historical pizza places as well.

  12. Nancy Says:

There must be a good reason why the “I Love New York t-shirt has continued to sell over the course of nearly half a century. My parents bought one of those shirts from a souvenir shop when I was very young during the late 70′s, and I remember wearing it out. I still see some people wearing them today. I like New York as a place to visit, but I would much rather live near the tropical beach most of the year.

  13. Roger Says:

Now the Statue of Liberty isn’t actually in New York City right? Are there other things to see in the Harbor that she is in? How far up inside her can you go? I thought at one time that you could go all the way up into the torch but didn’t they shut that part down? I want to go to Time Square as well I think that would be a fun place to shop.

  14. Christopher Says:

I am a huge football fan so I want to see the Giants stadium they are one of my favorite teams. Where exactly is that located anyway? And I want to go shopping in Down Town New York and see some theatre maybe on Broadway. But from what I understand they have vineyards in upper state New York as well right? I would love to tour some of those.

  15. Stephen Says:

New York sounds like a lot of fun especially if you were going with a bunch of girl friends to go shopping and to the theatre and such. I am discussing it with my friends to see if they think we could come up with the money to do something like this. I appreciate all the ideas for stuff to do while we are there. You did an excellent job with your blog.

  16. Leon Says:

There’s a lot to do in New York these four things are just a drop in the bucket of fun things to do. New York has a lot of great places to eat and they have some deserts that are out of this world good. I would love to see the Twin Towers memorial though. That memorial means so much to us and this country. This will be very helpful on our trip.

  17. Benny Says:

Despite having been to New York, I would have never known about these little known aspects of Brooklyn. I agree with one of the readers, that this borough has a stigma associated with it of being a dangerous, high crime area. Part of the reason is that some of the neighborhoods are low income areas, but another reason is that it has been portrayed in the movies as a high area and that is because it was during the 1970′s. But that has changed in the past two decades.

  18. David Says:

I never thought about actually walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, I guess I thought it was longer than just a twenty minute walk. Are there gift shops centered around the bridge somewhere for souvenirs’ and things? How about restaurants? If you walk the bridge it would be nice if there were things to see and do at either end of the bridge. This is a great idea, thanks.

  19. Pamela Says:

There is so much to do in New York how can you even know where to begin. I do agree though that hardly anyone ever thinks to venture over to Brooklyn for site seeing. I think this Pizza Tour will do wonders for that because it looks like a lot of fun. Do you think this will cause them to make some improvements to Brooklyn and clean it up?

  20. Otis Says:

Coney Island is something I forgot all about. Is it still an amusement park? That would be a lot of fun especially if you have kids to entertain on this vacation, because New York is not a kids vacation spot it is more for adults so anything like this would help a great deal. Not to mention kids love pizza so it sounds like Brooklyn is the place to go if you have kids.

  21. Pamela Says:

Isn’t the museum that was in the movie “Night of the Museum in New York somewhere? I thought I read that somewhere but maybe it is in Washington. Are the shows on Broadway really expensive? My wife would like to go to one but the entire trip is cost quite a bundle. And do they have the Opera there as well? I guess she’ll have to pick one or the other if that’s the case.

  22. Dwayne Says:

Do you think Brooklyn’s crime rate is as bad as they make it out to be on TV? Maybe that is why it is so difficult to get people to go there. The Brooklyn Art Museum sounds like lots of fun especially on the first Saturday of the month. What kind of party do they throw anyway? I like Art but I never knew that this was where the 2nd largest museum was.

  23. Robert Says:

I know that there is a lot to do in New York or Manhattan Island etc. and that this article is about Brooklyn mainly but could you give us a little inside information as to what the best things to do in Manhattan are as well? What kind of restaurants are good to visit there? If you go to Brooklyn for Pizza I don’t want Pizza again. I can’t wait to go there.

  24. Sergio Says:

When I think of the Brooklyn Bridge, I can’t help but see it as this gloomy and dangerous place at night. I tend to subscribe to this perception because of how it has often been depicted in movies. Certain films I’ve seen show the bridge at night and during a deadly car accident or some catastrophe or it usually serves as the backdrop of a homicide. This is the first time I have seen it as a fun, tourist friendly spot in the daytime.

  25. Gregory Says:

That video of the Pizza Tours looks like so much fun. That guy seems to really have a since of humor and a lot of knowledge about the pizza places in Brooklyn. From the sounds of it there is some real history at some of those places. I think the whole family would love this because the kids could eat pizza and the wife and I could enjoy the history of the trip.

  26. David Says:

I think that everyone’s main focus when they go to New York is the Statue of Liberty and the Twin Towers memorial, which are both really great reasons to go there, but there is so much more to see then that. You mentioned the art museum in Brooklyn, what about the Zoo, what part of New York is that in? I would love to see that simply because it’s a zoo in a big city.

  27. Mark Says:

Your blog gives me a lot of good ideas for things to do while in the New York area. But this gives me ideas of things to look for in other places as well. Do most of your travel agents know about things like this and can find out information like tours and sites in other towns like Colorado? I am really looking forward to going to New York now but I am also planning ahead.

  28. Robert Says:

Are there still rides at Coney Island that are open? That place has been around so long I was wondering if they have closed It down? What else is there to do in New York or the surrounding area that will entertain kids at the ages of 8 to 12? My husband and I want to go there but we are afraid the kids wouldn’t like it at all. Please post any ideas.

  29. Jerome Says:

My job used to take me to New York sometimes but we could never do any site seeing while we were there because there was never enough time. Not to mention when driving a big rig there isn’t a lot of room at these places to park or maneuver around. We did see a lot of things we want to see when we go back though and your list will add to that nicely.

  30. Austin Says:

What other kind of tours do they have around New York? They don’t have celebrity tours like in Hollywood do they because you know some of them live there. I want to tour one of the Vineyards in upper state New York and isn’t Niagara Falls close by? I am thinking a week may not be enough time to visit everything we want to visit.

  31. Iris Says:

Thank you for the post this has really given me some ideas. I live in New York and I have some friends coming to visit and I was trying to figure out some things that we could do to entertain them. This Brooklyn adventure has got to be top on the list because they are from Chicago and they think they have the best pizza around. This will be loads of fun.

  32. Robert Says:

I want to see Central Park and the New York Zoo among the other things that should be obvious, you don’t go to New York without seeing the Statue of Liberty or the Twin Towers memorial. But now that I have seen your blog I’m going to have to add the Brooklyn adventure to my list of things to do as well. And I have to take a walk down Broadway where the theatres are.

  33. Robert Says:

I have to go to Metlife Stadium on a tour because the Giants are one of my favorite teams and the Jets are up there to. I appreciate the blog though because it has given me some other things to look forward to as well. How many bridges are there going back and forth across the river there? Isn’t the Statue of Liberty close to Jersey City?

  34. Robert Says:

This was a very interesting blog and until recently I had no interest in going to New York at all. We went through there on a trip to New Jersey in our rig and ever since then I have wanted to go back. Thank you for the ideas for something else to do as well. I love pizza so I know that tour will be lots of fun.

  35. Mark Says:

There is a lot to do in New York, Manhattan and Brooklyn. Why do you suppose that Brooklyn gets such a bad rap? Just because they are in TV shows as having a high crime rate that doesn’t mean that they really do does it? I am still curious to go there. What kind of shows are there on Broadway right now and how expensive are they? I think that is something we should experience.

  36. Edwin Says:

This is a great blog, it’s obvious that you like New York and have been there many times if you don’t live there. I watched the video and I could swear I’ve seen the guy doing the tour in something else before. I’ve never been there but I am looking forward to seeing it finally. I wanted to wait for a few years and let 9/11 kind of calm down before venturing that way.

  37. Jodi Says:

I would love to go to little Italy (is that in Brooklyn?) to sit down a real, family run restaurant and taste some good old fashion Italian cooking. Or visit a New York style Pizzeria. The city looks so interesting in the daytime and must be a lot of fun to traverse when you are visiting any of the five boroughs. I saw a movie recently which featured many of the sites including a restaurant that overlooks the bridge and the water.

  38. Suzanne Says:

I think the shopping plazas (and the bargains and quality you can find there) are one of the unsung aspects of the boroughs outside of Manhattan. I remember visiting New York and going to the North Bronx area and getting of at Fordham Road. I went there looking to buy clothes and accessories and I was pleasantly surprised to find good quality products at reasonable prices. The mom and pop shops throughout Brooklyn are also worth visiting.

  39. Margaret Says:

I’m going to New York on business in a couple of weeks and I am so glad I ran across your blog before I left. I would never have thought to go to Brooklyn while I’m there but now I have to try this tour for dinner some evening. I think my co-workers will like it as well. Thank you for the tips and ideas I am sure the trip won’t be so boring now.

  40. Anthony Says:

Your blog gave me some ideas so I called the travel agent and started asking about tours and things in other states of interest and come to find out New York is not the only interesting place out there. I am planning a trip to Tennessee and they have all kinds of things like this to do there, one being a tour of Graceland (Elvis Presley’s home). Thank you for the idea.

  41. Amber Says:

I am impressed with how pleasant the medley of areas of the city is including the bridge itself. The terrain has so much character. Even though I tend not to want to wind up at any tourist traps, I think I might enjoy taking one of these tourist tours throughout the city. But I like to also do my own research and planning. Besides, I have family that lives in two of the surrounding boroughs.

  42. Jennifer Says:

We are taking the whole family to New York for vacation, is there anything in the Big City that will interest kids? We are going to hit Niagara Falls on our way to the city and we plan on Coney Island but I am afraid they will be bored when we get to the city. Maybe they would like to see the Zoo isn’t there one in New York City somewhere?

  43. Mark Says:

I am not very hungry and all it took was watching this very entertaining video and seeing all of the old fashion making of New York style Pizza. I could almost smell the scent of freshly baked Pizza. One thing is blatantly obvious, commercial chain Pizza does not compare to the serving size of a 24 slice Pizza Pie. The price for that big square pie was not mentioned. So I don’t know how price compares, but it sure looks tasty.

  44. Jose Says:

You have some really good ideas of things to see and do especially in Brooklyn. I will definitely have to walk across that bridge and take lots of pictures of the water. Are there gift shops and things around the bridge? I wouldn’t mind staying nearby there, how close do you suppose the nearest hotel is? I don’t mean to sound judgmental but do you think the Brooklyn side is safe enough to stay there?

  45. Jose Says:

Upper State New York is so pretty when the vineyards are blooming in the spring. I want to go there on a tour this year so I’m going to try and do the Brooklyn Tour as well, from what I hear it’s really fun and the pizza is out of this world. Do you think they would have any of the vineyard wine on this tour? This is so exciting I can’t wait to go.

  46. Douglas Says:

I’ve never been to New York I especially have never been to Brooklyn. Is it true what they say about Brooklyn, is it really the bad neighborhood of New York? Or is that the Bronx? Is this a trip that you would feel safe taking if you were a single female in her twenties? Maybe I should take some friends with me, it sounds like so much fun I really don’t want to miss out.

  47. Anne Says:

Heaps of things to do in New York there’s the other buroughs as well

  48. Anne Says:

Lady Liberty is in New York harbour so not far at all across to Jersey.

  49. Anne Says:

There is the Bronx Zoo and there is also a smaller zoo in Central Park

  50. Teresa Says:

I would say this is a must list for those who like to do what the locals do – assuming you’re well aware of the major attractions of the city: Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art. I appreciate a source like this that can guide you to the top places where tourists don’t normally go (though, let’s be honest, they’re everywhere), places where New Yorkers live and play.

  51. Paul Says:

I have been to New York and Brooklyn before and didn’t hear or see anything about this Pizza Tour you are talking about in your blog. When did they start doing this, maybe it was after I was there last? Can you be a little more specific on how to find this tour? I am in New York at least once every other month and I am looking forward to this.

  52. Nancy Says:

This was a very interesting blog and you have given me some really fun ideas. The last time I was there they had closed of the ability to climb all the way to the torch of the Statue of Liberty; do you know if they have opened that back up again or if they are going to at all? I proposed to my wife there and wanted to go back for our anniversary.

  53. Timothy Says:

I love New York, I have been there numerous times because I have family that lives there. I absolutely love the theatre and the restaurants on Broadway and the art museums are great as well. I have to admit though that I have never gone to Brooklyn while I’ve been there and that is something I need to change, thank you for writing about the pizza tour.

  54. Sarah Says:

New York sounds like a great place to go visit but I’m from the deep south, grew up on a ranch taking care of pigs and livestock so I think I belong in New York about as much as an elevator in an outhouse. Maybe someday when I retire or something but I wouldn’t be comfortable at this time going there. As a matter of fact I don’t like getting far from home at all.

  55. Alexander Says:

Is the guy in the video that is the tour guide an actor by chance? He looks really familiar like I have seen him in a movie or something. Are there very many celebrity sightings in New York? I know people claim to see a lot of movie stars when they go to California but surely there are some spotted in New York right? Where would be the best place to go see them?

  56. Steven Says:

I have read numerous books on things to do in New York City and the surrounding areas and this is new to me. Your blog has brought to my attention the most fun I can think of having while in Brooklyn and I have to know more about this, like how much does it cost, what is the schedule and where do you find them to take the tour?

  57. John Says:

I am a huge football fan so I have to go to Metlife Stadium on a tour because the Giants are one of my favorite teams. Do they ever give tours during training camp because I would love to meet some of those guys, especially Eli Manning? I’ll have to check this out some more because if they do then I will have to plan my vacation around that time.

  58. Michael Says:

Ever since 9/11 I have wanted to go to New York just to see that memorial to the Twin Towers. It is still hard to believe that something that huge happened on our own soil and in such a densely populated place. I still want to go there really bad so I am glad that I found your blog which gave me other ideas for things to do while I’m there.

  59. Carolyn Says:

New York is so close to New Jersey you can almost feel it. I hate New Jersey and when we went there the last time we ended up in Jersey City where you can actually see the Statue of Liberty from behind. That was very cool and ever since then I have wanted to go to New York just to see her. I hope you take no offence to this.

  60. Linda Says:

After many of the New York transplants who infested the American Airlines Arena in Miami on Thursday night only to watch their Knicks catch a beat down from the Miami Heat, maybe some of us Floridians will return the favor by invading their turf and taking a big bite out of the delicious Pizza from the Italian joint featured in this video. While I’m at it, I think I’ll attend a game at Madison Square Garden wearing my Miami Heat jersey.

  61. Edna Says:

I understood everything until I got to the granite, gelato, and game of bocce. What are these things exactly? What time of the year is Coney Island open? You said you could still ride the coaster in the summer months but what else is there to do there the rest of the time? I want to take my kids here but I don’t want them to be bored.

  62. Timmy Says:

How close to the Atlantic Avenue is the Brooklyn Museum? I could go there in the morning, hit the spice stores in the afternoon enjoy some Vietnamese food for dinner and then go to the bar or lounge for drinks after. That would make for a very fun day especially if my girlfriends went with me. Thanks for the ideas maybe we could play a game of Bocce as well.

  63. Jennifer Says:

It sounds like the Cosmopolitan Atlantic Avenue would be the place to go for those who try to eat healthy. And I love Vietnamese food so I would really like to try it. Not to mention I am sure the crowd at some of those upmarket bars is a real blast. What hours are the spice stores open especially on Friday or Saturday so that I could just make a day of it down there?

  64. Maryjane Says:

I will be going to culinary school in New York this next year so my family and I are planning on visiting this summer to check out the school and where I will be living, you know how parents are, but I would very much like to visit the Vietnamese restaurant and the spice stores and the pizza places so I can get a taste of different things I might learn to cook while there.

  65. Tracy Says:

Does the Vietnamese restaurant have Gelato for dessert or do they only have Vietnamese desserts? Isn’t their food kind of spicy or is that Thai food I’m thinking of? This sounds like lots of fun and I have never been to an art museum before so I might as well make my first the one with the 2nd largest collection in the world right? Thank you for bringing Brooklyn to mind.

  66. Henry Says:

This sounds like so much fun but I am very interested to see what else they come up with off the beaten path as they put it, so I am going to have to send an email to that info.bbtravel email address and see what they come up with for a personalized vacation. It sounds like there is to much to do here to make this a honeymoon spot though.

  67. James Says:

As a cook I would love to go to the spice stores because I am always looking for new menu items. Maybe I can find some rare spice that will help me make a masterpiece for the restaurant. I took cooking classes there in New York and they didn’t once mention these spice stores, do you suppose they were keeping them a secret for themselves?

  68. Harold Says:

My husband proposed to me at the Statue of Liberty’s feet so we want to celebrate our 15th anniversary in New York. I know we will visit the Statue but I was wondering what else we could do while there and you have successfully given me a lot of ideas. Thank you so much I know he will absolutely love it. Do you know if you can still go up inside the Statue or not?

  69. Sung Says:

Something I really want to do because it is such a big city is, I want to go out on the Brooklyn Bridge at night and get pictures of the city with all the pretty lights, I have never seen a more beautiful night skyline then that one. You had a lot of great ideas in your blog and I thank you for that, I don’t have a travel agent so thanks again.

  70. Susan Says:

Some of my relatives, all of whom reside in various parts of Queens and Brooklyn, came to South Florida to visit two years ago. I on the other hand, have not gone to visit them since the mid 1980′s. I recall back then how much I enjoyed shopping for unique fashions which were not available in Florida. Keep in mind, that was before the age of the internet. Now, I don’t need to leave my home, but I should reciprocate and visit them anyway.

  71. Anne Says:

Yes you can go inside although check before you go as I know they are starting renovations on Liberty Island

  72. Anne Says:

Everything is pretty central so easy to get around in a day.

  73. Anne Says:

Food, food and a ball game like bowls only smaller. Coney Island is open during the summer months. There are shops open etc along the boardwalk which is also interesting.

  74. Anne Says:

I am an Australian so no offence taken :)

  75. Anne Says:

No not a movie star – unless his own videos count.

  76. Anne Says:

Just google pizza tour Brooklyn and it will give you all the information you need. Otherwise you can book through your travel agent or the NYC visitors site.

  77. Walter Says:

I wonder if the travel agent who runs this website offers any travel and lodge package deals that include Jet Blue as the designated airline. I ask because I know a person who travels often to and from New Jersey and Florida. He chooses to use Jet Blue because of the discount air fair rates. And in the quest to find the lowest possible price for a package deal to New York, maybe jet Blue is a good choice.

  78. Anne Says:

Jet Blue may well provide packages but I am in Australia so a local travel agent would be best

  79. Jerry Says:

I have been shopping all the spice merchants I can find when I travel because I like new and different things. It sounds like the Cosmopolitan Atlantic Avenue would be the place to go for those who try to eat healthy as well as new and different. You wouldn’t know if they have a web site would you, I’ll have to check it out and see if they do or not before I go.

  80. Steven Says:

You mentioned that on the first Saturday of the month the Art museum in Brooklyn has a party. I love parties, can you explain that a little more in another post perhaps? What do they do at this party and how long does it go on? This sounds like something even the kids would like unless there is a lot of alcohol and things there.

  81. Joseph Says:

This sounds like lots of fun and I have never been to an art museum before so I might as well make my first the one with the 2nd largest collection in the world right? Is Vietnamese food spicy? My husband will try almost anything once but if it is to spicy he won’t. Thank you for bringing Brooklyn to mind. And if you happen to know about the food please reply.

  82. Julie Says:

I am not much of a bar goer but I have to admit that this sounds very entertaining. How close to the Atlantic Avenue is the Brooklyn Museum? I could go there in the morning, hit the spice stores in the afternoon enjoy some Vietnamese food for dinner and then go play a game of Bocce as well. Great blog packed full of ideas thank you.

  83. Craig Says:

Do you know where the more elite restaurants are in New York? I will be going to culinary school there this next year so my family and I are planning on visiting this summer to check out the school and where I will be living, you know how parents are, but I would very much like to visit some of the restaurants that I might be able to get a job at while in school.

  84. Erma Says:

This sounds like so much fun but I am very interested to see what else they come up with off the beaten path as they put it, I know it says to contact info.bbtravel by email but I was rather hoping that you could make it another blog post. It sounds like there is too much to do here to get it all done in a week I might have to make it two weeks.

  85. Sophia Says:

I took cooking classes there in New York and we would go to this spice store quite often because they had some of the more rare spices that we use in some of our more expensive dishes. I moved away from there a few years ago and I had forgotten all about that place until I read your blog. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. I’ll have to go back and visit soon.

  86. Sophia Says:

I have to admit that there isn’t but a few things I like about New York and that is the Statue of Liberty, the New York Giants and the Twin Tower Memorial. Other than those three things I never had much reason to go there but now that you have shown that video in your blog I’m thinking I need to go for the pizza. Next football season I’ll be sure to check it out.

  87. Leonel Says:

Wow New York City, Manhattan, Brooklyn, they all seem so unreal except on TV. I am from a small town in Kansas so I have never been to New York but after reading your post I am looking forward to it. This is one of those places that you never thought you would be able to go but my husband and I will find a way to get out there.

  88. Anne Says:

Vietnamese is not overly spicey. Most restaurants will list on their menu if things are spicey.

  89. Jessica Says:

Thank you for posting this information about Brooklyn I believe it gets a bad rap sometimes because people mistake it and the Bronx for the same thing. A lot of good people came out of Brooklyn, as a matter of fact I once had a pen pal when I was a teenager that was from Brooklyn and he had that very strong accent. It was so much fun writing to him.

  90. Marcus Says:

It sounds like the Cosmopolitan Atlantic Avenue would be the place to go for those who try to eat healthy. And I love Vietnamese food so I would really like to try it. Not to mention I am sure the crowd at some of those upmarket bars is a real blast. What hours are the spice stores open especially on Friday or Saturday so that I could just make a day of it down there?

  91. Lois Says:

New York is not one of my favorite spots nor is it a dream vacation spot but I have to admit that this sounds like fun. I think going to Brooklyn would be an adventure and the pizza looks fantastic. I appreciate you putting this little video in your blog because it made me want to read the rest of the blog and see what else is there. Thanks for posting this information.

  92. Mark Says:

I have heard that the Culinary Schools in New York are some of the best there are. I have also heard that as a student they can sometimes get you jobs in the restaurants that the famous people frequent and teach the ropes of the restaurant business. Is that true are do you know? I was thinking about going there because I want to open a restaurant someday.

  93. Joseph Says:

Out of all the schools that they have in New York do they have one that teaches Vietnamese cooking? I am going to go to school there in the fall and I want to make sure I go to the one that offers the most variety of food types. From what I understand a lot of the schools focus on Italian and French Cuisine. I’ll do some more research before I decide.

  94. Debra Says:

I want to go out on the Brooklyn Bridge at night and get pictures of the city with all the pretty lights, I have never seen a more beautiful night skyline then that one. And I want to climb up in the Statue Of Liberty as far as you can at night just to see what it looks like from there, can you do that or do they close it at night?

  95. Tim Says:

I wonder if they have one of these spice stores anywhere besides Brooklyn? I live in California so I am going to have to do some research and see if they have one around there or if I can order their spices on-line. The lounge there also sounds like a good place to go to have fun on a Saturday night so I will have to get my friends to take me while I’m there.

  96. Lois Says:

This sounds like a great place to visit but it also sounds more like an adult vacation not really something for the kids to enjoy. I want to do this but I think it will have to wait until it is just my husband and I after our kids aren’t going on vacation with us anymore. Thank you for this information I will keep it in the back of my dream book for now.

  97. Paula Says:

New York has a zoo don’t they? I know they have Central Park and I would like to see that but I also like to go to the zoo when I go someplace new just to see how it compares to others and see if they have any animals that I haven’t seen before. Do they have an aquarium? It is such a big beautiful city I would bet there is a whole bunch of stuff to do.

  98. Matthew Says:

All of this you described is great and sounds like lots of excitement for an adult or a group of adult friends. I have two children that are pre-teens what is there to do there that would be fun for them besides the pizza tour simply because they love pizza? Is Coney Island open anymore or if it is do they have anything fun for kids amusements anymore?

  99. Rita Says:

Although I am a Miami Heat fan, I would love to catch a New York Knicks game at the newly renovated and historic Madison Square Garden. This is not as easy as it was just a couple of weeks ago, before Linsanity’ swept all of New York and the basketball world, not to mention the sports and mainstream entertainment media. Apparently, a Knicks game has become the hottest ticket in the city with prices ranging up to 10 grand.

  100. Charlie Says:

I have some friends that live in Brooklyn and they have actually mentioned some of the pizza places that you have on your blog. They said the pizza is absolutely fantastic and one of them is their regular pizza joint. They have also been to the spice market you mentioned and have found rare spices from other countries that they swear by. Thank you for the blog I am looking forward to a visit.

  101. Rita Says:

Isn’t there a school in New York that teaches dance and singing and acting etc. (I guess they call that a school for the arts). Where in New York is that? I have found all of the culinary schools out there but I haven’t found that one yet and my daughter is very interested. If you know would you mind replying to my comment?

  102. Valerie Says:

The King Cole Bar and Harry’s New York Bar in Paris lay claim to the Bloody Mary, but why quibble? The signature St. Regis cocktail is spicy, smoky, and totally worth every penny of its exorbinant price. Have you ever been served cocktails by waiters with white-gloves? I find the St. Regis too stuffy. I prefer to have the bartender at the Tribeca Grand’s Church Lounge mix me up a Wasabi Bloody Mary, created by mixologist Sasha Petraske for the hotel’s now-defunct Sanctum.

  103. Timothy Says:

One place I defiantly want to go shopping at the next time I step foot in the city is Addidas store I hear so much about from my street savvy fashion trendy friends. The triple-stripe sportswear company has moved out of the gym and into retro fashion. Young jocks and wannabe D.J.’s come here for anything from key chains, track suits and tees to limited-edition shoes. I am no stranger to mixing and matching to create my own style and this seems to be an ideal destination.

  104. Les Says:

There are certainly plenty of iconic places to eat and drink and see. There are also a lot of things not to do: Crowded tourist traps, overhyped eateries, and not-so-authentic experiences are among the ones you should feel free to skip, especially if your time in town is limited. (On the other hand, even locals agree that a few of New York City’s most famous tourist attractions are actually worth every elbow bump, every admission dollar, and every minute you spend in line.

  105. Lynn Says:

I know I can always find the latest McSweeney’s books at St. Marks Bookshop. They also have a great selection of contemporary fiction and unique art books. My reading wish list grows every time I visit this bookstore. The staff is friendly and always have a book recommendation for me. Sadly, It has had problems recently; e-books have been cutting into their bottom line, and they’ve had benefit parties and book signings. Even Michael Moore gave a talk there and signed some books.

  106. Sean Says:

One of the most intriguing events I found out about is the Tour of Sex and the City Hotspots. Apparently, you can follow in the footsteps of Carrie and Co. as they conquer New York City. You can drink where they drink, shop where they shop, and gossip where they gossip. This tour has over 40 locations on the tour, which include Shopping at The Pleasure Chest where Charlotte bought her ‘Rabbit’. Have a cupcake at the bakery where Miranda stuffed cupcakes into her mouth – and many more spots from scenes in the movie.

  107. Annie Says:

With so many restaurants in New York City, it is a good idea to get feedback from people who have knowledge of the terrain and who can provide real accounts of their experiences. Wood-fired cooking is having a big moment. Mercado on Kent Ave. is a Spanish market-style restaurant that brings tinder-fueled ovens to NY. The resident Chef is a native of San Sebastian, Spain who works two wood-fired ovens in the open kitchen, while another chef uses one to roast his loaves in the downstairs bakery.

  108. Irene Says:

I have heard some really good things about the Italian restaurants in New York City but the ones in Brooklyn seem to be a big secret or something. I appreciate the hard work that you have put into this blog and your write up was really good. I am definitely going to follow your advice and do some of these things. Please be sure to post again if you have any more ideas.

  109. Mollie Says:

My daughter would like to go to the School of the Arts in New York so we will be going there this summer to check it out. Is that when you said that the Museum has the parties on Saturday? I think it would be a good time to make a weekend of it and do the museum, the pizza tour and the school all at the same time. Thank you for the idea I appreciate it.

  110. Mollie Says:

The Brooklyn Bridge is like an icon in so many movies it is ridiculous. I am definitely going to make sure to go there, I can’t believe that it only takes about 20 minutes to walk across the entire bridge. Do they have gift shops centered around the bridge? Are there restaurants around there as well or lounges so you can stop and get a drink?

  111. Kurt Says:

I had no idea that Coney Island was still open, do they still have all the rides or just the coaster? This would be fun for the kids and a trip down memory lane for my husband and I, we used to go there every weekend. We moved away before the kids were born, I think it’s about time we went back for a visit. Thanks for the reminder of how fun it was.

  112. John Says:

Although Brooklyn sounds like fun I am more interested in going to Broadway to see a show and central park for a walk and some street vendor hot dogs. I know that a walk on Brooklyn Bridge would be really romantic though and the pizza tour could be a lot of fun with a large group of friends. This was a great blog and I appreciate the ideas.

  113. Franklin Says:

You did a really good job on your blog, you included some things to do that I was not aware of and I am from New York. Some friends of mine live in Brooklyn and they didn’t know about the pizza tour is this a fairly new thing? I am going to visit them this summer and we are going to make a night of it finishing at the lounge on Atlantic Avenue.

  114. John Says:

This sounds great but I have to go to the Statue of Liberty and the memorial for the Twin Towers when I’m there is there anything around them other than gift shops? Are there any casinos in New York? My husband likes to play cards when we get the chance and I do fairly good at the slots. I once considered moving to New York but I decided I was not a big city girl.

  115. Jane Says:

You must live in New York, you have done a great job putting this together and it seems like you really know what you are talking about when it comes to things to do. What else is there to do in New York City though? What about shopping doesn’t New York have a Rodeo Drive or something like California? My girlfriends and I really like to shop so that information would be great.

  116. Anne Says:

    Thanks for the tips!

  117. Lana Says:

That is an really interesting question that one of the readers posed about Coney Island. I started to wonder the very same thing after I started watching the HBO TV series, Boardwalk Empire. I think what spawned my curiosity about whether Coney Island is still a tourist location was a scene in one of the episodes which showed that section back when it was at its peak of popularity. So has anyone actually been there lately?

  118. Gladys Says:

Out of the few times that I have been to New York, I can’t believe that I haven’t gone to see more Broadway shows. The current show that I would like to see is the one about basketball hall of fame rivals Magic Johnson and Larry Byrd. If you plan on hitting Broadway, make sure you don’t miss the chandelier rising in The Phantom of the Opera because you arrived late. And don’t waste time fuming over brusque treatment from an usher during the opening of The Lion King.

  119. Mary Says:

When I was living in New York City, I used to enjoy shopping at a bodega owned by a Korean family in midtown Manhattan. The store sparkled with cleanliness. Then they stocked it with all the grocery items they felt the people in their area wanted. They were open early in the morning. They stayed open late at night. They never failed to give a friendly greeting to their customers. Naturally, they became wonderfully successful. I think it’s still there to this day.

  120. Robert Says:

I have to admit that a game of bocce sounds like a load of fun, I have never played it before but some friends of mine that actually live in New York have a membership to a gym where they can play indoor bocce all day if they want. I will have to look them up while I’m there and see if we can get in a game or two. Thanks for the idea.

  121. James Says:

Is Brooklyn really as bad as the movies make it out to be? You know you always see these police shows in Brooklyn and you hear about the crime rate and things and it makes you think before you go over there what to expect. On the Slice of Pizza Tour you should be safe right I mean you are going to pizza joints eating pizza what could happen?

  122. Brooke Says:

I had no idea that garnita and gelato were like ice cream. Why do they call it by those names does it have a different flavor or flavors? Maybe they call it that because of where it is served. If it is served at a hamburger joint do they call it ice cream? Your blog has taught me quite a bit like what bocce is, I had no idea until I read your blog.

  123. Debra Says:

Me in New York just does not match. I would be so out of place there it would be ridiculous. I’m from the farm and I don’t have the fancy clothes and styles of clothes that everyone wears I have blue jeans and T-shirts with my boots. It sounds like a great place to go but I just don’t think it’s for me. I do love pizza though that sounds like a load of fun.

  124. Mary Says:

I’m really not much for foreign foods but I am going to have to step out and try the Vietnamese restaurant and see how it is. Is it really spicy? They are actually using chicken and cows for the meat correct? I would also love to check out that spice store because I love to cook. I would be extremely excited if I could find this one spice that I have been looking for forever.

  125. Carolyn Says:

You did a really good job on your blog, you included some things to do that I was not aware of and I am from New York. Some friends of mine live in Brooklyn and they didn’t know about the pizza tour is this a fairly new thing? I am going to visit them this summer and we are going to make a night of it finishing at the lounge on Atlantic Avenue.

  126. Stephanie Says:

You said that the Brooklyn Museum has the 2nd largest collection in the US, who has the first? And what kinds of things do they do at these parties on the first Saturday of every month? I think my son would absolutely love this because he is really into art right now. This was a great blog full of fun information and great ideas. Good job I hope to see more soon.

  127. Samuel Says:

I made reservations for Nobu restaurant in Tribeca and thought I should go dressed to the 9s only to realize that we arrived way overdressed. The design makes you feel like your in an old ratty couch. The service was torturously slow. we were forced to order a set menu only to find the next table over was allowed to order a la carte because they were regulars. So if you dislike snobbish attitudes from the staff, this is not the eatery for you.

  128. Mark Says:

Thoughtful service and a warm ambiance only enhance the delicious food served by the kitchen at Craftbar. My party of four enjoyed three appetizers: beef tongue, scotch quail egg and pecorino arancini that were all easy to share and perfectly executed. Dessert was a real hit at our table: grapefruit panna cotta with a pomegranate reduction and a delicate poppy cookie, followed by churros dipped in chili chocolate. Interesting flavors on classic dishes, which left us wishing we were hungry for more.

  129. Stacy Says:

I hadn’t heard about it until now but I have to admit that a game of bocce sounds like a load of fun, I have never played it before but some friends of mine that actually live in New and they tell me it is a blast. I am going there for an interview for a job so I will definitely have to check out the amenities to living there.

  130. Joan Says:

Aren’t there some actors that own restaurants in New York? I have seen shows where they talk about a burger joint that the Wahlberg brothers own but I can’t remember where it is exactly. Do you know if it is in New York? Do they have a restaurant out on the Island with the Statue of Liberty? You take a ferry out to the Statue right, how long can you stay out there?

  131. Louise Says:

I never knew until this last year the Niagara Falls was in New York, of course It isn’t near the city it’s in upper state New York and it’s beautiful as well as the many vineyards that they have there too. There is a lot to New York than just the cities that it is famous for. I am not by any means a city girls but I could live in Upper State New York.

  132. Martha Says:

Many are more familiar with the restaurant formerly known as Houstons but Hillstone is the exact same restaurant. When dining here, you must order their signature spinach and artichoke dip. It’s wickedly delicious. Their steaks are great and I am a huge fan of their mango tuna salad, but the burgers are true standouts. These puppies are huge and cooked exactly to your preference. Their crispy fries complement the dish perfectly. The setting is nice- dark, and manly but good for a family or group of girls too.

  133. Alexandra Says:

I am curious to visit Brooklyn but I would like to go see the Bronx as well, I am involved in some outreach programs and one of them is reaching out to the kids that live in rough neighborhoods to get them grounded so they aren’t out there joining gangs. Is there anything special to do there? What is the best way to get there from Manhatten anyway a cab?

  134. Rosalia Says:

Where is the largest art museum if the Brooklyn Museum has the 2nd largest collection in the US? I think my son would absolutely love this because he is really into art right now and if you throw in a party at the museum on Saturday he would be thrilled. This was a great blog full of fun information and great ideas for a family vacation even.

  135. Barbara Says:

I own a small restaurant and I am all the time looking for new ideas so I am going to New York where some of the best culinary schools are and some of the most famous restaurants to see if I can discover anything for my restaurant. I will have to check out the spice shop as well because I have heard that they have some very unique stuff.

  136. Tyesha Says:

My girlfriends and I are going to New York this summer to tour some of the culinary schools there and the college and possibly the school of the arts. This will help us find things to do that will keep us out of trouble. I’m super excited to visit Coney Island, My parents have told me such fun stories from there when they were kids. I hope that more than the coaster is open though.

  137. Anne Says:

The subway will take you there as well.

  138. Anne Says:

Thanks for tip it sounds great

  139. Anne Says:

Yes you can get food on Liberty island and you can stay there as long as the ferries are running.

  140. Anne Says:

Not positive but it may be the Met.

  141. Anne Says:

Coney Island has attractions all year round. It is mainly in summer though for the rides etc.http://coneyislandfunguide.com/Rides-And-Attractions.htm

  142. Joaquin Says:

Is it any coincidence that this video features the people who work at “A slice of Brooklyn pizzeria? After all, I just saw a promotion for a new reality TV series based on these owners of this landmark Pizzeria, which has apparently been established for decades. Is that why they are being interviewed in this video news report? I guess they are now official reality TV stars. I think it premiers this month on the A&E network.

  143. Mary Says:

Do you know if the local YMCA would have instruction on how to play bocce? I don’t want to go to New York and play it for the first time not knowing anything about it. But here in Kansas I have to admit I have never heard anybody talk about it so I was wondering how I would learn how to play. Maybe they have a book at the library that tells you how?

  144. Alejandra Says:

Aren’t there movie stars that live in New York? They don’t have a tour of the stars homes do they like California does? I think it would be really cool if I ran into a famous person while I’m there. You have a very interesting blog and I now have something I have got to do when I go. Thank you for your hard work I appreciate it because I don’t have to do it.

  145. Brian Says:

I have seen shows where they talk about a burger joint that the Wahlberg brothers own but I can’t remember where it is exactly do you know if it’s in New York? Do they have a restaurant out on the Island with the Statue of Liberty? You take a ferry out to the Statue right, how many times does the ferry run in a day?

  146. Hattie Says:

Is there anything to do in Long Island besides the obvious? I am only going to be in New York for a week so I want to see as much as I possibly can. I doubt very seriously I will ever go back so I want to make it as fun as possible. The ideas that you put in your blog are great but they don’t seem like they would take very long to do.

  147. Michael Says:

There seems to be a great deal to do in New York it is almost like Disney World but more crowded. I have to go to Central Park and Time Square at least once while I am there. Every year I watch from the TV when they have their New Year’s bash and I really want to see that for myself. Great post thank you for the advice.

  148. Kam Says:

At Coney Island what is there to do besides eat. I do not go on vacation to eat all the time and gain a bunch of weight because Lord know’s it doesn’t come off easy anymore. From what I understand there used to be a lot to do there it was like an amusement park , you mentioned the roller coaster was still open in the summer months is there anything else?

  149. Ryan Says:

Isn’t there a Boardwalk or something along the water in the bay area where you can do a bunch of shopping? I would like to go there if I can find out the name of it and where exactly it is located. Do they have some of that famous New York food down there? I can’t wait to go on vacation now.

  150. Brian Says:

You have a great blog and I appreciate the fact that you are taking the time to answer the questions the best you can. I didn’t realize that you were in Australia though. I believe that I read your blog on Australia about a month ago correct? You do some really great work and offer a lot of information. Thank you for putting so much work into each one.

  151. Sandy Says:

This sounds great, eating a slice of pizza while you walk on the Brooklyn Bridge, go to the zoo in Central Park (wasn’t Madagascar made off of that zoo) maybe even the Bronx Zoo. Then check out the museum and have dinner at the Vietnamese restaurant. I hope we have pretty weather to do all of this because it would make a great day.

  152. Ellen Says:

I was in NY for a long weekend (my first time), and while there I couldn’t wait to visit the Dash store! Ok, I’ll admit it- I’m a fan of the kim k line of products. So I talked my friend into going this store that now has such a following. I got there just before 12 noon and there was this huge group of 13 and 14 year old girls outside with their parents looking like they were about to burst with excitement. This seems common, so be ready to deal with lines of loud teens on any day.

  153. Annette Says:

I don’t want to go to New York and play bocce for the first time not knowing anything about it. I need to find someone here that knows how to play so they can teach me before I go embarrass myself. But I have to admit I’ve never heard anybody talk about it so I was wondering how I would learn how to play if I can’t find someone. Maybe there is something on-line.

  154. Alan Says:

I want to go check out the Boardwalk and do some serious shopping. My mom and I are going just for a ladies weekend and that is the main reason we are going. I will have to see what she would think about the spice shop and the Vietnamese restaurant. She is old fashioned so I don’t know if she will want to try something new in New York of all places.

  155. Neal Says:

I am so grateful that I ran across this blog I was trying to talk my husband in to going to New York for our vacation but he didn’t want to because he doesn’t think there is anything there to do. Now and can show him what I have found and hopefully convince him that isn’t true. I know he will like the pizza thing but I am not to sure about the rest.

  156. Megan Says:

I am very surprised at how much there is to do in New York, with the zoo’s, the shopping, the monuments etc. this could be very fun plus educational. I hope that my kids like It as well as I think I am going to. I am thinking of taking my parents along with us as well. You did a great job on your blog it is entertaining and informative.

  157. David Says:

I doubt very seriously I’ll ever go back to New York so I want to make it as fun as possible while I’m there. Is there anything to do in Long Island besides the obvious? I’m only going to be in New York for a week so I want to see as much as I possibly can. The ideas that you put in your blog are great thank you for that.

  158. James Says:

Those who are planning to visit some of the secret gems that only locals know about, might also want to take a detour into the Bronx. I know that borough has a bad reputation for having a high poverty and crime rate, but if you go in the daytime, you can enjoy strolling through the natural terrain of one of their prized land marks, the Bronx Zoo. I looked it up on google street views and it looks like a good time.

  159. Naomi Says:

I went to New York a couple of years ago and did the walk across the Brooklyn bridge at night and it was absolutely beautiful. I am a big fan of skylines and when they light up at night the way New Yorks does it is even better. Thank you for your blog, you did an excellent job putting it together. I am actually looking forward to going now.

  160. Roger Says:

I am going to New York on business but I am hoping to get in some me time as well so the things that you mentioned in your blog sounds like the best thing to do. I can take some of the people I am meeting with me to the Vietnamese place and the lounge and that should be fun. Thank you for mentioning these things in your article.

  161. Alan Says:

Your blog gives me a lot of good ideas for things to do while in the New York area. But this gives me ideas of things to look for in other places as well. Do most of your travel agents know about things like this and can find out information like tours and sites in other towns like Colorado? I am really looking forward to going to New York now but I am also planning ahead.

  162. Gloria Says:

Kings Plaza in Brooklyn is in decline. I’m from Jersey and went to Kings Plaza Mall because it is close to a friend’s house. I’ve noticed in the past 2 years that the customer service has declined and the prices are increasing. In some stores, if you are a woman, the clerks will ignore you. Besides the increased prices, there is also a $3 parking fee. Just walk through the mall and see it for yourself – or better yet, avoid it.

  163. Thomas Says:

I read somewhere that New York has approximately 18,000 restaurants. This certainly guarantees endless diversity and choice. I would like to get my hands on a list, organized neighborhood by neighborhood and covering all budgets and boroughs, from Brooklyn’s Indian eateries to the finest French restaurants of the Upper East Side. I would also like to know where you can eat for less than $50 (for 2 persons). I guess this blog is just as useful!

  164. John Says:

After trying the other delis in NYC, I found out that I saved the best for last. The food is just like my grandmother used to make (she would be happy that I was eating kosher). While grandma didn’t charge me for the food, the 2nd Avenue Deli has the same prices as the other NYC delis. If you find yourself in New York City, make it a point to stop by this classic deli and enjoy.

  165. David Says:

Delicatessen in Manhattan This might be the most stylish ” Delicatessen” in town but truth be told the passable pastrami is the only thing Deli-like about the place. It’s another perfect Soho spot for people watching. Keeping it simple here is key, think breakfasts and burgers and you’ll be fine. I really liked the Food, Atmosphere and even the Dcor. Its great for tourists who want to be in the know and go where the locals go.

  166. Dustin Says:

Of course, most people have heard of the Carnegie Deli. But it may not be on your list of places to visit while you are in town. And if it is, then you’re falling into a tourist trap. This place is so overrated. Turkey sandwich is just a pound and a half of turkey on rye bread (thats it!), for a whopping $20. The service was absolute garbage. Waiter was pressing us to order the moment we walked in. You feel like you are being hustled.

  167. Jason Says:

Do NOT even entertain the thought of bringing your friends to 230 Fifth. My friend and i decided to go to this place for her birthday to do something different. When we got to the front of the line the bouncer asked us 21 questions and told us to step to the side. We politely stepped to the side. when the group of only 2 people got to the front of the line, they were asked no questions, When we complained, they said it’s the “door-man’s discression”. Don’t you hate that sort of snobbery?

  168. Charles Says:

I was surfing the Internet and came across some images of The Russian Tea Room which is on 57th Street in New York City. I had seen video footage of this restaurant on some lifestyle entertainment news show and I noticed that is it decorated to the tee (pardon the pun) with a red square type of theme. I sure would like to try this place the next time I find myself in the city.

  169. Gerald Says:

There is absolutely nothing to dislike about the New York City skyline. There is a reason it is one of the coolest cities in the world. Soaring buildings. Eclectic architecture. Lights. You get great views from several locations. If you get to New York City, this is a must to be experienced at least once in your lifetime. I don’t know of anyone that has ever complained about the view. Now if only they would add a zip line!

  170. Marion Says:

My little nephew pointed out the Brooklyn Bridge to me in a picture the other day unfortunately it was in London so I think it was the Golden Gate bridge instead. I couldn’t tell him thought and break his heart he is only four he’ll learn all about it later in school. I did get a good giggle out of it though. I’m surprised that it would only take 20 min. to walk across it.

  171. Gary Says:

On a long weekend in NYC we stayed at a hotel right across from Columbus Circle and found it to be a perfect location. The shops in Columbus Circle are toward the upscale end, but a nice variety for all kinds of shopping. There are places to eat as well, sit down vs fast food. Central Park is across the Columbus Circle “plaza” for more shopping and eating with a variety of vendors. Easy access to subway was well.

  172. Glenda Says:

My daughter is going to New York with her school over spring break, they are using this as their senior trip because so many of them want to go to college or a trade school up there. Now that I have seen your blog and can give them some ideas of what to do while they are there besides visiting the schools. Thank you so much, you know teenagers and pizza.

  173. Authentic Italian Westlake Says:

Hello There. I discovered your weblog using msn. This is a very neatly written article. I’ll make sure to bookmark it and return to read extra of your helpful info. Thanks for the post. I’ll certainly return.

They are being interviewed because they run the tour.

  175. Teresa Says:

Whenever I travel, I used to always make sure I had a gym picked out for my workouts (until I started P90X). On a previous excursion, I tried the New York Sport Club. This place is a pretty satisfactory gym! No out of service equipment; the staff is friendly and there are fresh towels galore! My friend is a member here and she bought me a 30-day pass and I enjoyed every visit. If you keep fit even on vacations, go there.

  176. Antonio Says:

I wanted to visit a roof top bar in the city and once I went to Terminal 5, it became one of my favorite concert venues in NYC. I will agree with some people’s complaints that it is a little rough to maneuver, but it’s always what you make of it, and I really like the roof top bar but you have to get there early. I’ve had some great times here including Manu Chau and Gotan Project.

  177. Catherine Says:

I never appreciated the expression, “less is more until I unwittingly walked by the Less Less store. This is an addiction! Less Less offers irresistible savings up to 80% off other store prices, on the brand names that many people know. I really like this store because there is always something that I convince myself that I need. Maybe it’s the low price that makes you want to need an item. Their cheap pricing is like a jedi mind trick.

  178. Isabelle Says:

Do you think that very many spring breakers go to New York? I would bet they don’t because they all want to party and the parties are in California and Florida at the beach. My girlfriends want to go to Broadway for Spring Break and I am trying to decide what to do. They only want to go there because they want to get into theatre if at all possible.

  179. Mattie Says:

I am really into photography these days and I am taking a class at the local school but when they let out for spring break I am going to New York to get some pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge and the memorial for 9/11. I think maybe they will be some good extra credit when we start back up. Thank you for the idea though because this will be unexpected.

  180. Eric Says:

I am so excited about seeing the Brooklyn Bridge in person. I am really striving to do art and I am going to study there in New York next year so I want to get there and draw the bridge in charcoals I am hoping they have some nice vantage points from the Brooklyn side because I would like to get some of the Big City in the picture as well.

  181. Paige Says:

I am taking a group of students to New York over Spring Break to check out the school of the arts because a few of them want to go there in the fall. I was thinking that they would love to do the pizza tour over in Brooklyn as well because they are technically still kids. And besides who doesn’t like pizza right? Thank you for the ideas for the trip they’ll love it.

  182. Michael Says:

Do they ever have anything special going on at time square besides at New Years? I have to go there just to check out the big screen and the crowd that they talk about all the time. Is there a lot of shopping spots in Time Square as well or is it just a bunch of businesses? Should you avoid any part of New York at night like central park.

  183. Paige Says:

Is Central Park as high a crime place as it is made out to be? I want to go there but I am a little scared maybe I should just make sure I go during the day. Do they have horse police patrolling that area? I would really like to see some of them. And isn’t that where you can rent a carriage ride? That would be really cool. How big is the Brooklyn Zoo?

  184. Maria Says:

I have noticed that this particular blog has been out here awhile are you going to be posting any new ones anytime soon? There are a lot of places in the US that I would like to learn about or get some travel advice for, Have you considered taking requests? If so I have a few just let me know. Thank you for the info on New York by the way.

  185. Matthew Says:

Dumbo is a great area to take out-of-town guests. The highlights include the view of Manhattan, the various sections of parks, the chocolate factory, Grimaldi’s, cute shops, and old streets. A fun thing is to take the ferry or water taxi from the dock – to Williamsburg or Manhattan. Also, you can walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Be sure to look at a map because the neighborhood is a bit spread out so you may miss sections if you are not careful.

  186. Carolyn Says:

For some time, I was going through a major Long Island City phase. And during that particular phase, I had been in the neighborhood a lot. There is no question that the graffiti in that area is some of the most phenomenal urban artwork in New York City. And there’s always something vaguely forlorn and isolated about the area that just adds to the overall ambiance. For those who are looking to go off the beat and path, go into this area.

  187. James Says:

The Noguchi Museum is a serene place to visit if you ever get tired of the concrete jungle ambience of the city. If I am not mistaken, this is the site of a certain romantic comedy. The placement of the sculptures in the garden-like setting has the feeling of a master artist at work. Fans of Noguchi or modern sculpture should go. It is not easy, however, to get there without a car, which is the reason there is a shuttle service available from Manhattan.

  188. Joan Says:

So is there a pizza place at Coney Island that you go to on this tour in Brooklyn? I used to visit Coney island when I was a kid and I can’t remember for the life of me. I do know that I want to go there for the gelato because they have some of the best in New York or anywhere for that matter. This was very interesting and it really sounds like fun.

  189. Rebecca Says:

I know that this sounds a little weird but I have heard so much about how great the hot dogs are that you get from the vendors on the street in downtown New York City that I have got to try one for myself. Some friends of mine told me to go to Central Park and find a vendor there, and that they have all of this great stuff that you can put on them.

  190. Paul Says:

So you suggest the Brooklyn Bridge walk as a fun thing to do while in New York but you also said it only takes about 20 minutes to walk it, do they have anything else there to do that is near by it? I guess if you take your time and stop and look out over the water and take some pictures etc. it could be an interesting day.

  191. Sharon Says:

I was actually on-line checking out the pizza places that are on the tour and I found some coupons that you can use at the places. I wonder if they will let you use them if you are on the tour though. This was very interesting and I have found a lot more information and things to do online as well. I wouldn’t have even been looking if I hadn’t read your blog though.

  192. Rebecca Says:

You know how on TV they always show these people on the streets playing music of some sort for change donations and the people in the subway. Is that stuff true? I’d like to ride the Subway just for the experience of being on one because we don’t have those here but not if it is dangerous. I know that didn’t have much to do with your article but I thought maybe you would know.

  193. John Says:

You have put together some great blogs and this one about New York has been out for awhile, I can’t wait for you to do another city like maybe Miami or Dallas, I bet they would have some fun stuff to do. I’ve heard of the one place in Dallas where you can get a 72 ounce steak and the atmosphere is really fun. But that is for another day, keep up the good work.

  194. Karen Says:

Where do the Police that ride horse back hang out? I would really like to see those horses up close if they would let me. Are these horses trained like the dogs are or do you know? I am going to have to research them some more because our department would like to start using them and I need to find out as much information as I possible can.

  195. Lisa Says:

I was about to subscribe to the Spreets news letter in order to receive regular travel discounts, but when I went to choose my city, I noticed that it seems limited to cities in Australia. Is this offer limited to travel discounts coming out of Australia? Are these travel discounts that you provide as a mediator for the local resident of Australia or is that just an error with the list menu on the form?

  196. Tabatha Says:

The iconic Radio City Music Hall used to be a theatre to go to watch a movie and see a great stage show. Now there are a lot of special shows and the Christmas revue. If I’m not mistaken, Saturday Night Live telecasts from there, don’t they? I still love watching the rockettes. They are unique to New York City and Radio City and I would recommend anyone visiting see that show just because it’s a classic.

  197. Lynda Says:

To my pleasant surprise, I came across the FAO Caf during my journey or rest and relaxation. This place is great for Kids and adults! They have a huge selection of any toy a kid could ever imagine! There is also an amazing selection of candy and entertainment! Be prepared for long lines at times, but it shouldn’t matter because it is worth the wait. So head to 5th Avenue as most do for shopping.

  198. Arlene Says:

Coney Island has always sounded like a fun place to visit with a lot of fun things to do. Or at least that was what it sounded like back in the day. Do you know if they have kept it up or if it has gotten run down over the years. You mentioned that the coaster could still be ridden in the summer months, what else do they have there?

  199. Brittany Says:

I want to go to New York really bad and this blog just confirmed it even more but I unfortunately can not find anyone who wants to go with me. I don’t think that traveling alone is a very fun thing to do and I also don’t think that it is very safe so I try as a single woman to find some friends who would like to travel with me.

  200. Michael Says:

Is Coney Island where the Coney Dog originated from? I hear this is one of the places that serves the best one. How close is the Boardwalk to Coney Island anyway? I noticed that you didn’t mention the Boardwalk in your blog is there a particular reason or there is just to much information for one blog? I can see that because new York is just a beautiful place.

  201. Byron Says:

I’ll get to the Big Apple one of these days if it’s the last thing I do. I have lived in the central US all of my life and we don’t have Cities as big as this one nor do we have buildings that tall, that is something I want to experience. Not to mention I really would like to see the memorial to 9/11 someday. Thank you for the other interesting ideas as well.

  202. Anthony Says:

Isn’t there a really famous pizzeria in New York that has been in restaurant magazines and shows etc.? I would be very curious to go there, I don’t suppose it would be on the Brooklyn Tour though. I have also heard of some other very famous restaurants there as well. I love food and I would love to see some famous people while I’m there so I am looking for their hang outs.

  203. Anthony Says:

I was reading your blog and this all sounds like a lot of fun, but I was wondering if there are any night clubs or dance clubs that you can recommend as good spots to socialize as well. I am in collage and some friends and I are going there over our break and we love pizza but we love to dance and party as well. If you do just respond to this comment please.

  204. Phil Says:

I was reading this article about a young man that grew up in Harlem and he is putting his self through collage by tap dancing on the Subway on the weekends and he drives five hours from school just to do this. I would really like to see him while I’m there because I would like to help him out if I can. This has been an interesting blog , thank you for the information.

  205. Roderick Says:

I advise anyone strolling in the city to stop by Motorino on East 12 Street when you build up your appetite. Neopolitan style goodness. The crust comes out soft and fluffy, crisp but not crunchy out from a wood burning oven. Crust is definitely what makes it… the toppings is pure icing. Some personal favorites? Brussel Sprouts & Pancetta, Soppressata Piccante, Stracciatella and the classic Margherita. Then wash it down with some sparkling Gragnano from Naples.

  206. Danny Says:

Katz’S Delicatessen is a deli you should definitely visit. They serve some great huge juicy corned beef and brisket sandwiches. I happen to love the knishes as well as the matzo ball soup. It’s all delicious. You can either order the food at the counter and self serve, or you can sit at the tables and have waiter service. Either way the food is great. They also ship throughout the United States. Liked: Food, Service, Portions.

  207. Elena Says:

I happen to be a fan of many film genres including action, romantic comedies and even animations. But I am really fond of science fiction and to a lesser extent, horror films. Why am I mentioning this on a travel site? Because If you are a fan of the horror film, Rosemary’s Baby, You should visit The Dakota on 72nd street just so you can finally have a look at one of the film’s settings. 10 minutes should be enough.

  208. James Says:

If you like the arts, especially performance art, you will no doubt visit the Met and other famous landmarks. But if you want to be considered a savvy conniseur, visit the Performance Space 122. It’s known as P.S. 122. It is a not-for-profit arts organization and one of the longest standing venues dedicated to contemporary performance art in New York City. Just like the backdrops in movies, it’s located in the abandoned Public School 122 building at 150 First Avenue.

  209. Dirk Says:

I am very satisfied with both my purchase and the urbane, customer friendly experience which I got at the Yellow Korner photo gallery. This is a great art photo gallery and one of the best kept secrets in the city for fine art photo connoisseurs. I Bought some pictures there last year for a Christmas present for a very good price. The selection of photos is great and well displayed. I’ll be back’ for more.

  210. William Says:

I have never thought about going to New York on vacation because when you think about Vacation you think about fun stuff to keep you entertained for awhile. After reading your blog I will have to research this a little more because I am sure now that your ideas are just a drop in the bucket of what is to do there. Thanks for the idea though I can’t wait to get started.

  211. Troy Says:

I’ve been to a few Mets games but honestly I had more fun roaming around Shea stadium than watching the game (I am certainly not a baseball fan – though it is relaxing to watch). This stadium has some really cool shops and places to eat and you can catch the game on all of the big screens which seem to be hanging everywhere. I would not say it is the best stadium, but it is a fun time.

  212. Albert Says:

I had a problem at the Empire State Building because no large cameras are allowed. When I asked why, they treat you like a terrorist. Once I finally got up there, I realized the views are better at Rockefeller, for sure . The rent a cops perpetuate unecessary drama. It was an absolute disappointment from beginning to end. It left a negative view in my mind about NYC rent a cops. It’s like a movie sequel: Paul Blart Mall Cop get promoted to building cop – and drives tourist away.

  213. William Says:

I’ve heard about Coney Island before but I have never been there. Isn’t there a bunch of shops and things there as well as attractions? Didn’t there used to be a big Ferris wheel there or am I thinking of someplace else? London I think has a really big one there right on the river walk. Do you have any information on London?

  214. Ricardo Says:

I am a native of New York and your blog has just made me very home sick. I’ve been away for awhile now and I think it’s time to go for a visit. Thank you for reminding me of the beauties of home, my parents will be thrilled and there is no time like the summer to enjoy my time there. You have a great blog and you did mention some of the key attractions.

  215. Dirk Says:

Your blog was great I was wondering why you didn’t mention the memorial to 9/11 as a sight to go see or the Statue of Liberty. Is it because that would be a given that you would have to do while you were there and you shouldn’t have to be told about it? That does make since I guess I was just curious is all. I like the idea of going to Brooklyn too though.

  216. Troy Says:

If you are anything like me, and you get some sense of pride from being unconventional in your approach to anything, including your residency, then you owe it to yourself to consider at The Octagon apartments. It was built in a historic octagonal building located at 888 Main Street on Roosevelt Island in New York City. It originally served as the main entrance to the New York City Lunatic Asylum which opened in 1841. It’s more for those who like the Macomb. Not for you if you fear that ghosts may haunt you.

  217. Ron Says:

There is something magical about being in the heart of New York city at night, with all those big bright lights glimmering and illuminating the darkened sky. I have not been there since I was much younger; certainly, I was too young then to appreciate the beauty of the city. But I have seen several scenes in movies which filmed in various parts of New York. Just thinking about it makes me want to buy a travel package.

  218. Jaleesa Says:

I wonder what spring break is like in New York. We all know how the tropical areas like Miami and Cancun, Mexico are like during spring break as they are well documented in the news, movies and on MTV during their coverage from Cancun and Daytona Beach, Florida. But what is it like in the city? Could this actually be an ideal time to go vacation in New York, away from the rowdy college crowds?

  219. Kelsey Says:

I was on Broadway once performing in a play, it was a very long time ago. Your blog about New York and Brooklyn has brought back a lot of memories for me. I moved away after I injured my knee and couldn’t perform anymore, I just couldn’t bear the thought of being so close to the theatre and not be able to do it anymore. Maybe it is time for a visit though.

  220. Sandra Says:

Is there anything of interest to see in Harlem? I need to go there for my job this next month and I am looking for something to do while I’m there. We are starting a new community center in the area and I could be there for a few weeks. I plan to do as much of the stuff as you mentioned in your article but I was wondering if you knew about anything there.

  221. Kevin Says:

I never really knew there was so much to do in New York and so much to see. This was a very interesting blog and I am very interested to go there and check it out now. I really never imagined anything in Brooklyn to do but I guess there is something everywhere isn’t there. Thank you for posting this and bringing it to our attention. I am looking forward to planning a trip there now.

  222. Esperanza Says:

I moved away from New York when I reached 20 because I couldn’t handle the stress of the daily life there anymore. I lived in a high rise with my parents and the stress of the streets in downtown New York City was just to much for me, I developed an anxiety disorder. So I finally left but that was 10 years ago, I think it is time to return.

  223. Liz Says:

Thank you for the information especially about the Brooklyn Bridge and the pizza tour, that’s awesome. Do you happen to know if they give tours of the football stadium where the Giants and Jets play or not. I’m a huge football fan and I would really like to go to the stadium if I can convince my husband it would be worth it. If you have any info on that please reply to this comment.

  224. Billy Says:

Great job on your blog, that was very informative and to the point not to mention the advertisements on the side weren’t over bearing and the background pictures of all the different places was really cool. Will you be posting information like this for other places soon? You did such a great job on this one I truly think you should.

  225. Shawn Says:

So exactly how big is the Zoo in Brooklyn? I want to make sure and see the one in Central Park but I didn’t realize there was another one so close. Thank you for all the information this was a lot to digest but it sounds like a blast. Some girlfriends and myself are going to go there this summer and stay with one of their families so I’m looking for things to entertain us.

  226. Carson Says:

I have been looking for information like this on Africa or South America do you happen to have anything like that in your library of knowledge? I am going to Africa on a mission trip and was wondering what all there is to do where we are going to be. If you have any ideas please let me know by simply replying to this post. Thank you in advance and keep up the good work.

  227. Esperanza Says:

You do great work, I’ve seen some of your other blogs on vacation spots and such, didn’t you do one on Australia? I read one on Australia not to long ago and I thought it was you but if it wasn’t I apologize. Anyway you did great on this post and I hope that you will expand and do some more locations soon. I can’t tell you how much this is going help my vacation.
