Hawaii Holidays are one of the best holidays that you can undertake. There is a huge range of Hawaii accommodation to choose from as well as a huge range of activities. Here are 10 of the best activities I have found on my visits to Hawaii. Remember, there are several islands that make up Hawaii and all of them have special activities. The goal is for you to have the most fun possible and enjoy your Hawaiian holiday.
Hawaii Activity #1 Hanauma Bay
Hanauma Bay, on the island of Oahu, boasts an amazing coral reef that is simply out of this world. There are many fish species that call Hanauma Bay and the coral reef their home, which makes for incredible snorkeling. In fact, so many people snorkel at Hanauma Bay that it often gets quite crowded. So, if you want to snorkel you should get there early or find out which days are the slowest in order to enjoy this fabulous experience.
Hawaii Activity #2 Hawaii Volcanoes
The Volcanoes National Park on the main island of Hawaii is out of this world. When you visit this park you will encounter 330,000 acres preserved for hiking and the like, as well as Mona Lau volcano that is dormant and the active, lava flowing Kilauea volcano. You will be impressed to see the red, hot glow of lava oozing out of this volcano. Spend a few hours or even a few days in The Volcanoes National Park.
Hawaii Activity #3 Maui Drive
Take the road from the Kahului Airport all the way to Hana and you will pass over countless bridges, enjoy the beautiful landscape where you will see pineapples growing and proceed through the tropical rainforest where other amazing fruits grow in addition to eucalyptus trees (just like home). It takes several hours to make this short drive, but near the end you will be blessed with the vision of black sand beaches that are simply astonishing in their beauty. When you finally end up in Hana you can enjoy excursions to waterfalls as well as great hikes.
Hawaii Activity #4 Waimea Canyon
Located on the island of Kauai the Waimea Canyon is simply a breathtaking experience. The canyon is so large and colourful that Mark Twain dubbed it the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” You will love
the adventure and scenery so you must include this on your “to do” list.
Hawaii Activity # 5 Waikiki Beach
If you are looking for a luxurious resort and a relaxing beach, then Waikiki Beach is the place for you. There are many resorts located right on the foreshore of Waikiki which was made popular in the 1800s by Hawaiian royalty who frequented the area. There are many standards of accommodation from budget ( a few blocks back) to luxurious right on the beachfront.
Hawaii Activity #6 Kona
The Kona coast on the big island of Hawaii is a great resort location and its beaches are fabulous for sun bathing and other beach activities, as well as fishing and even snorkeling. As a result, many people holiday here because there are so many activities available in one place. There are also coffee plantations that produce the natural and organic Kona coffee and there are tours available to see how coffee is grown, processed, and ultimately packaged and sold. Whatever you decide to do, Kona has a lot of options.
Hawaii Activity # 7 Na’Pali Coast
The island of Kauai boasts the Na’Pali Coast which is one of nature’s wonders. The towering cliffs originate on the ocean’s floor and ascend from the water to create amazing gorges created by waterfalls streaming down over centuries and eroding the stone. You can hike to the Na’Pali coast, but you would need to allow a full day to do this, there are however other options available including boat tours and helicopter rides that will also allow you to reach Na’Pali without so much effort.
Hawaii Activity #8 Iao Valley
This cloud covered valley on the island of Maui provides a historical lesson for tourists because this flourishing valley was the home to the agricultural god, Lono, and during feast week the Hawaiians all
join together in the Iao Valley to honour Lono. You will be amazed at the shape of the valley and the general feeling you have of history when you visit this amazing place on Maui.
Hawaii Activity #9 Go Whale Watching
Whale watching can be a spectacular experience so you should definitely include this in your itinerary. There are whale watching tours that can be booked from Hawaii, Kauai, Oahu, or Maui. You should book in advance, however, because these tours fill quickly and are not available year round!
Hawaii Activity #10 Luau
When people think of Hawaii the first thing that comes to mind is the luau. As a result, when you visit the islands you absolutely must attend a Polynesian luau to top off your holiday. You will enjoy
the food, music, dance, and sites of the luau and it will be an experience that will stay with you long after your holiday ends.
When you visit the islands you will not have enough time to do all the amazing activities waiting for you. So, you should pick the ones you find most interesting and save the rest for other Hawaii Holidays.

Unfortunately we have never been in the position to visit Hawaii. As seen from the comments it is on everybody’s radar. We have heard nice stories from Kona and Waikiki Beach so if we have the opportunity that would be our preferred choices. My parents just came back from a trip to Hawaii for their fiftieth anniversary, they are a little to old to do some of the stuff you listed but I’m not and I am looking forward to it. They did do some Luau’s and they really enjoyed that and they went to the Iao Valley which they said was absolutely gorgeous. This is some great information that I am going to keep for my trip.

I would love to go to Hawaii but from what I am hearing it is very expensive just to eat over there. My parents went not to long ago and my dad was telling me he spent $45 on breakfast alone. After so many people far and wide started complaining via social media about this year’s NFL pro Bowl game (which is held in Hawai), I figured it might be ideal at the end of the next football season to take a vacation to Hawai as the tickets to the Pro Bowl may be at an all time low. And even if the NFL takes drastic measures to improve the Pro Bowl next year, it will only mean I will get to enjoy it all the more.

I have always wanted to visit Hawaii, but I have never followed through to plan a vacation there mainly because my friend’s mother once visited there and talked about how expensive it is to stay at those paradise like hotel resorts. She was wealthy and could certainly afford her vacations. So when she spoke about the price of paradise, it wasn’t from a complainer’s stand point. I could tell it was an objective view point.

How close can you get to Kilauea before the heat from the lava is to much to stand? I heard very good things and seen some spectacular photos of the Aulani Disney resort in Hawaii. Each of the rooms is equipped with robes, premium bath products and a Pack ‘n Play yardso you can pack lightly and take home more memories from your vacation. I can’t imagine a resort that is close to the excitement of Waikiki, yet is tucked quietly away – making it the ideal setting to unwind in. But from what I hear, that is exactly what the Mariott Waikiki beachside resort has in store for its guests. I hear you can create your own paradise. According to the travel guides, it is located next to the celebrated Diamond Head Crater and near a dazzling host of attractions and sights.

You can hike right out onto the lava. The best way to see the lava flow into the ocean is on a boat trip. Not sure of the geological makeup of the black sand but it definitely has to do with the volcano.

The sand bottom hot tub is great! We love staying here. Agreed “the welcome package” could be considered entrapment but also a bit entertaining, providing you make it such. I’ve been to the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort and it is expensive and EXTREMELY “touristy”. The rooms are nicely appointed and there is a TON of things to do right here in the resort. The Self Park structure is also not that bad of a hike and the shops are fun to duck in and out of. There are plenty of food options and it has an ABC Store located on the premise.

I know you only listed the top ten things to see and do right, because there is a lot more to do than just this. There is scuba diving, parasailing, hiking, surfing, etc. this is the most beautiful place around and the weather is beautiful all the time so anything you can think of to do outside, they have it. Hawaii has six romantic islands, tailor-made for lovers. You can spend the day sharing in adventures like watching the sunrise atop Haleakala or watching the sunset from Waikiki Beach. When I look at video and photos of the various Hawaii resorts, it really looks like a paradise unlike any other place on Earth. But like any popular tourist destination, the resort areas represent the very best that city or state has to offer. What you don’t see in the travel magazines and web sites are where the locals live (those who earn average incomes) and the impoverished, high crime, drug infested areas. I had a great time at The Imperial Hawaii Resort at Waikiki, Honolulu. It’s in a great location. It has a wonderful staff and it’s very clean. It’s only a 5 min walk to the beach. It’s not fancy but has everything you need including a flat screen TV in the living room and bedroom; microwave; small fridge and a stove top. There are good restaurants like PF Changs, CheeseCake Factory within 1-2 short blocks. We were on the 7th floor and heard very little street noise.

We stayed at this hotel as part of our Hawaii honeymoon, and then we later visited for vacation again. If you are planning a vacation to Hawaii, I cannot more highly recommend the books Hawaii – The Big Island Revealed and the others in the series for each island. I love coffee so Kona would have to be a place for me to visit while I’m there. Do they have paragliding or parasailing there? The fact that Hawaii doesn’t really have a natural supply of the basics for cooking like we do here and they have to have those things shipped in is the reason they have to charge so much for the stuff you eat. That is also the reason that they use Poi in almost everything they make which makes it taste a little less pleasurable than what we are used to.

A well kept secret away from the big name resorts is the villas at 177786 in Ko Olina, Hawaii. A well kept villa in a perfect location! The property is spacious and make you feel at home. The golf cart was a welcomed bonus and it was used daily to get to the beach at the lagoons. The new Disney Aulani resort is a must to experience. We enjoyed a magical character breakfast with Mickey and friends. I recommended this villa to everyone, and look forward to returning again in the future. Mahalo!

I booked two nights at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort because we wanted to be near the volcano. Got to Hilo and was very disappointed. It’s an airport town that is run down and so many of the stores were closed. Got to the hotel and it had no curb appeal! all the stores inside the hotel were gone. It had a ghost town feel about it. I booked an “ocean view” room, but when I got to the room, it was not what I expected. Buyer Beware.

So in Hawaii since they don’t have potatoes and wheat do they just use the Taro (Poi) to make everything like bread and mashed potatoes and such? I have been to Hawaii before and I absolutely loved it. The luau’s at night are so much fun and the entertainment does things that are absolutely amazing, the food is fabulous. I f I could go over here and do nothing but the Luau’s I would. Spend the day on the beach then a luau every night. They have some really amazing drinks at those luau’s as well.

My mother was telling me about her childhood which she spent in Ecuador (near the equatorial line) where mountains and volcanoes (active and dormant) exist. These tales so excited me that I couldn’t wait to plan a trip to Hawaii to hike the mountain regions and perhaps even a volcano. So now, I’m in the process of saving and budgeting for a vacation that will transpire hopefully sooner than later. Thank you for such an informative site.

Hawaii is so beautiful and it doesn’t matter what time of year you go there. You have listed a lot of things to do and see while there but I can tell it isn’t even a drop in the bucket. What does Poi taste like? Do they serve it with everything over there? What do they usually have at a luau? I have heard they are really fun and entertaining. I want to go over there for the beaches but I don’t think I will be getting in the water for quite awhile. I have seen some shark attack footage from over there so it is a little scary.

Oh My God, really? You mean to tell me that a beautiful exotic paradise vacation could be ruined by food that does not taste normal? I did not realize this. I wonder if this affects the large restaurant chains. So then maybe I should stick to eating seafood while I am there since the fish and mollusks have to come from the local fishing boats, right? I wouldn’t mind a steady diet of seafood and mai tai drinks.

Surfing is believed to have originated long ago in ancient Polynesia, later thriving in Hawaii. So it is only appropriate that when in Rome you do as the Romans – well, you know, apply that to surfing in Hawaii. That said, if you are intimidated about learning, there are plenty of instructors on the beach. You can watch surfers on every island. During the winter, the islands’ north shores generate big swells, while in the summer, the south shores enjoy a bump in size.

Sorry, but nowhere does it mention about the food not being normal. Hawaii is a state of the USA and apart from local food varities the rest is as you will find anywhere in a mainland state.

To clarify, I believe that the reader was referring to other comments left earlier by other people which made references to Poi and how it does not taste good. One reader wrote that he has heard many conflicting opinions about Poi and how it tastes. And then Clarence wrote/mentioned that they use Poi in almost everything they make which makes it taste a little less pleasurable than what we are used to’. I just wanted to clear that up.

We stayed in the Ali’i Tower of the Hilton Village for 3 nights while attending the Pro Bowl. The front desk personnel at the Hilton were all really wonderful. We enjoyed outside oceanfront breakfasts and dinners at Tropics. Great food, very reasonable. Stop by the barefoot bar for an ocean front cocktail with Hawaiian music. The NFL commissioner said during the Super Bowl that he is establishing a committee to improve the Pro Bowl next year. So it may be worth coming here next year.

I second that motion or vote for the Imperial at Waikiki. I’m sure the Travel Expert of this blog knows a little something about that place. I just returned from our trip to Hawaii and had a wonderful time and stay at that resort. The location of this hotel is excellent. Everything was within walking distance; No need for a rental car. We booked 4 tours and pickup/drop off was in front of the hotel.

Poi is used in local Hawaiian cooking but you can still certainly get ‘normal’ food everywhere. Poi certainly is an acquired taste!

All of this talk about all of the various spots is pumping me up to want to plan an excursion to the Island. Thanks to this blog, I can feel more confident about taking a vacation to Hawaii, knowing that I am backed by inside information on which spots are best. Knowing where things are located and near which events helps a lot so I do not wind up poorly planning all the logistic stuff.

I couldn’t help but notice that while mentioning all the things there is to do in Hawaii you neglected to mention the U.S.S. Missouri and the memorial. This is a major site to see and one of the only reason that we are visiting Hawaii in the first place. You did a great job on your blog but you might think about adding that in there as a site to see as well.

I like the Makena Beach and Golf Resort which has a kids’ club, a kids’ pool and kids menus, but also has a small pool with no waterslides and a small space for the kids club. it can’t hold a candle to the multipool majesty and extensive kids activities at other Wailea luxury resorts like the Grand Wailea’s spaceous kids camp and Fairmont’s impressive kids fitness programs. We all know the importance of exercise, especially for kids on vacation.

Well, the top ten activities that you have provided to enjoy in Hawaii are just phenomenal. I always love to visit Hawaii. I must say Keauhou Beach Resort is the only Big Island hotel where one can wade into oceanfront tide pools full of reef fish and sea turtles. And it is a big attraction point of boating and fishing.

When I was a kid, I heard about the famous volcanoes of Hawaii and I had decided to watch those volcanoes once. Today I read your blog and I remembered my words. I will surely go there in this summer.
